San Juan Basin
The San Juan Basin, in North Western New Mexico is a challenging area to manage with state, private, tribal and federal interests vying for development or protection of the small amounts of land not currently leased in this area. The local communities are dealing with ground level ozone in this heavily developed area that is approaching the USA EPA's harmful levels. Ground water contamination is poisoning livestock and threatening human lives.
Ecoflight's work with SJCA (San Juan Citizens' Alliance) will continue in the fight against Desert Rock, a third coal power plant in the Four Corners area. The pollution from the two current power plants and the associated fugitive dust has rendered this a high smog area and extraordinarily unhealthy area. It resembles Mexico City or Hong Kong in terms of the pollution and the effect on human and wildlife health is even greater. Visit http://www.sanjuancitizens.org to learn more about what is going on to protect the San Juan Basin.
