Rock Creek Mine – Montana

EcoFlight has a history and a passion in working to stop the Rock Creek and neighboring Montanore Mine in the northern Rockies.  Our collaborative partners in this endeavor are the Rock Creek Alliance, NRDC, Earthworks and the Craighead Environmental Research Institute.  The focus of our work here is to protect the Cabinet Mountains, a small but starkly beautiful wilderness area in northern Montana and Idaho.  The Rock Creek Mine would be constructed adjacent to and underneath this wilderness area that provides key habitat for a number of threatened species, extraordinary recreational opportunities and the source for pure drinking water in the Pend Oreille basin.  This mine would be a catastrophe for our country and a serious historical blunder. Never before has a mine been constructed in a federally designated wilderness area.  There is a deafening silence in congress for one of the country’s first wilderness areas.
